Musical “Pacific Overtures”

March 8, 2022 (Tue.) - April 16, 2023 (Sun.)

Set at the end of the Edo-period on the small island of Japan, the story unfolds around Commodore Perry's arrival from America on a gunboat. The isolationist government gets panicked and sends two men to the American ship to lead the negotiation to stop them from landing - the two men being Kayama Yasaemon, a lower-class samurai of Uraga, and John Manjiro who was captured for the crime of leaving the country. Although they once avert the crisis, Japan eventually ends up with a flood of Western admirals coming to force them to open trade. Under the watch of the Reciter, Japan inevitably heads toward the tumultuous era of opening itself to the rest of the world.
